American Embassy
Nouakchott, Mauritania
Dear Mr. Ambassador:
On behalf of all Mauritanians living in the US , I would like to express to you my deep appreciation for your stand with your real friends, members of National Front for the Defense of Democracy (NFDD), the ones who share your commitment for justice, liberty, and freedom.
Since August 6, Mauritania is without a legitimate government. General Ould Abdel Aziz, the former head of the presidential guard, has illegally seized power. He has put the democratically-elected president in jail and has placed the prime minister under house arrest. The takeover has been globally condemned. The United States , the European Union, the United Nation and the African Union have demanded the return to the constitutional order.
General Ould Abdel Aziz claims that he had seized power to protect the constitution and to put democracy on the right track. Despite these allegations to mislead the international community, the General’s regime has been unwilling to make concrete political concessions. He failed to file any charge against the elected president and kept him in prison without justification. He refused to set a time table for the organization of a new election. General Aziz’s determination to take on the absolute power indefinitely, without any responsibility and accountability has led to a general crisis in the country.
It is under these circumstances that a vicious terrorist attack perpetrated against a unit of our national army took place in which twelve soldiers were savagely killed. I vehemently condemn it. Military authoritarianism is the root cause of terrorism because it engenders anarchy. In order to successfully win the war on terror, the national army needs to seriously devote itself to its intended mission: the national defense.
For an effective fight against terrorism and for the sake of democracy, the on-going struggle to restore the democratically-elected president deserves international support. The reinstatement of the elected president ensures two objectives: it will end the involvement of the army in politics, so it can devote itself to the protection of the nation, and it will show that the international community is serious about its commitment to protect and promote democracy in Africa .
Thus, I am urging his Excellency not to fall for General Aziz’s scheme to attempt to legitimize his power by seizing the opportunity of this savage attack and placing himself in the front line in the fight against terrorism. I am calling for his Excellency to lead the international effort in imposing economical sanctions, and freezing the asset of the coup leaders.
Thank you for all of the important contributions you have made as an ambassador, most notably in the defense of freedom. Mauritanian people will be, forever, grateful to your service.
Respectfully,
Mohamed Fall Ould Sidatt
Washington DC.
USA.
