In 1986, black leaders published a Manifest document to demand social, cultural, economic and political equality and justice for all Mauritanians, blacks and Beidan. The publication of the Manifest document lead to arrests of many black leaders, as well as civilians and members of the armed forces. More than sixty (60) were convicted and sentenced to hard imprisonment at the Walata prison, where conditions of life are extremely hard. The convictions and sentencing sparked anger among the Negro Mauritanians, who continued to the fight for justice and equality.
